Common questions

How do you split rent by room size fairly?

Weight each bedroom by its floor area, then allocate the rent in proportion to those weights. A room that is 50% larger pays roughly 50% more. Shared spaces such as the kitchen and living room are not billed separately; their cost is spread across everyone through the per-square-foot rate.

Should a private bathroom cost extra?

Usually yes. A private or ensuite bathroom is a real perk, so this calculator adds a 15% weight premium to any room flagged with one. If your household disagrees, treat the premium as a starting point and adjust the room sizes to match what you all consider fair.

How do I measure a bedroom's square footage?

Multiply the room's length by its width in feet. You do not need to be exact to the inch; consistent, roughly measured numbers for every room produce a fair relative split.

What about closets, light, or a balcony?

Square footage and a private bathroom cover the biggest differences, but they will not capture everything. If one room has a balcony or much better light, nudge its square footage up by a small amount to reflect the premium.

Does this move money between roommates?

No. It only prices the rooms. TabChaser can turn each room's amount into a private monthly payment request and track who has paid.
