Common questions

How does the trip splitter decide who pays whom?

It adds up what each person paid out of pocket and subtracts their share of every expense they took part in. Whoever is net negative owes money; whoever is net positive is owed. It then matches the biggest debtor to the biggest creditor repeatedly, which produces the fewest transfers that clear everyone.

Can different people pay for different things?

Yes, that is the point. Each expense records its own payer, so one person can cover the villa, another the flights, and a third the groceries. The calculator reconciles all of it at the end.

What if only some of the group shares an expense?

Untick anyone who did not take part in a given expense. That cost is then split only among the people who shared it, while other expenses can still involve the whole group.

Does it minimise the number of payments?

Yes. Instead of everyone paying everyone back, it simplifies the debts to at most one fewer transfer than there are people, so a group of four settles in three payments or fewer.

Can I collect the settled amounts through TabChaser?

The calculator produces the exact transfers. TabChaser can send each person a private payment request for their amount and track who has paid, so the organiser is not chasing a group chat. The Host plan is $29 per month.
