How weights work
Uneven does not have to mean complicated
Weights describe relative shares. If three people use weights 1, 1, and 0.5, the total weight is 2.5. The first two people each owe 1 ÷ 2.5, or 40%, and the half-share person owes 20%.
Use the right input
Calculate one coherent cost pool at a time
- Include tax, tip, cleaning, service, and booking fees in the pool they belong to.
- Exclude people who did not participate, or give them a zero weight for this pool.
- Run separate calculations when accommodation, tickets, and meals have different participant lists.
- Keep the payer’s own share in the math, even though they do not request money from themselves.
Calculator FAQ
Common split questions
How do I calculate an uneven group split?
Give each person a share weight, add all weights, and allocate the total in proportion to each weight. For example, weights 1, 1, and 0.5 divide the bill into 40%, 40%, and 20%.
What do 0.5 and 2 mean?
A weight of 0.5 is half of a normal share and 2 is twice a normal share. The weights are relative, so 1, 1, and 2 produce the same percentages as 0.5, 0.5, and 1.
Why can equal shares differ by one cent?
Some totals cannot be divided evenly in cents. The calculator distributes leftover cents deterministically so the displayed shares add back to the exact bill instead of losing or creating money through rounding.
Does the calculator send payment requests?
The calculator only works out shares. TabChaser can turn those exact amounts into private payment links and track who is open, reported paid, or confirmed. The Host plan is $29 per month.
